The indoor microbiome is the microbes that reside in our homes, while the outdoor microbiome is the microbes that reside directly around our homes. These microbiomes shape the human microbiome as we go through our day.

  • Garbage cans
  • Shower curtains/door
  • Sinks
  • Surfaces exposed to feces/vomit/blood/raw meat
  • Toilet

There is a significant correlation between the types of microbes directly outside the home and those found inside the home.103 Therefore, facilitating microbial diversity outside your home has an enormous impact on the health of the indoor microbiome.

To increase microbial diversity outside your home: (95, 104)

  • Live in a rural or farm-like environment
  • Increase plant diversity
  • Promote wildlife (bird feeders)

Additionally, avoid using toxic agrochemicals, such as chemical fertilizers, when taking care of your lawn; opt for natural alternatives.

  • Agrochemicals decrease microbial diversity in soil(99, 100)
  • Exposure to agrochemicals increases the risk of developing allergies(101, 102)

Try to educate your neighbors on the benefits of using natural alternatives for lawn care. Their lawn's microbial diversity directly impacts your own lawn's microbial diversity.
